NWS Geo Hero Run 2018
Date: 8th Dec, 2018
No. of participants: 1,500
Organizer: NWS Holding Limited
Production: RunOurCity
Event Type: Running Race
Event Brief:
Held in Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark in Sai Kung; the races in half-marathon, 10km and 3km; runners set out from Pak Tam Chung in Sai Kung, ran towards East Dam of High Island Reservoir along Man Yee Road and returned to Pak Tam Chung to complete the race.
Green Highlights:
Since the racing route is within Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark, the event organizer held themselves accountable for being a “green organizer”. Many aspects of the event, ranging from application, food & beverages, logistics, to venue setup were incorporated with green elements. They were determined to go “entirely disposable cup free”, and appealed to participants to “Leave No Trace” along the race track for more effective execution of waste management.
Event Registration / Promotion:
.Online application only to minimize the use of paper.
Event Booklets / Promotional Materials:
.All brochures and promotional materials were sent to participants in electronic form.
Food / Drink Selection and Procurement:
.The suppliers were asked to reduce packaging, for example, no individual plastic bags for frozen pineapple.
.No disposable plastic utensils at the event. Instead, bamboo sticks and paper bags were provided.
.The event deliberately chose food that can be consumed without utensils.
Utensils / Food Container:
.To encourage athletes to “bring their own water bottles”, they could buy a foldable cup at a discount during application, or pledge to bring their own bottles on the event day and refill them in water-refilling stations at starting and finishing point.
.Reusable cups were used on the race track to avoid disposal of 8,340 single-use cups.
Surplus Food / Food Waste:
.Order food according to number of participants and weather forecast to reduce surplus food.
.All surplus food were donated to people in need.
.Pear cores were sent to farm for composting.
Souvenirs / Race Packs / Certificates:
.No packaging for the souvenir (towel)
.Participants who brought their own water bottle were awarded a one-day pass for ferry or a foldable food box.
.Participants could opt out of the souvenir.
.Instead of giving out hard copies, E-Certificates were given to participants.
Plastic / Gear Check Bags:
.Participants were invited to bring their own bags, such as used gear check bag or water-proof bags, instead of producing new plastic bags.
Carbon Emission:
.To encourage participants to take mass transportation, shuttle bus services were arranged between seven different districts and the starting point, and between the finishing point and Sai Kung Public Transport Interchange.
Stage Setup / Banners / Signage:
.Event date was not printed on most of the banners and signage, thus they could be reused in future events.
Waste Collection and Recycling Facilities:
.Recycling facilities and signages were set up in the starting and finishing point and along the track.
.Event staff members were assigned to assist participants in recycling at recycling stations.
.Recyclables were sent to reliable recyclers for processing.
.60 kg of cardboards, 21 kg of plastic bottles, 39 kg of aluminium cans, 73 kg fruit cores and 3kg Styrofoam were collected for recycling.
Green Message Promotion:
.Green messages were promoted through event brochures and social media before the event.
.All event staff, volunteers and participants were encouraged to support all green measures during the event.
Sustainable Countryside:
.Limited the number of participants according to the carrying capacity of the race track.
.Since the race track was within Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark, the event called on participants to “Leave No Trace”. Instead of the “traditional” way of throwing cups on the ground, runners put the water cups they used in the collection bins. Packaging of supplements given away along the track were removed beforehand to prevent from blowing away to pollute hill slopes and the reservoir.
